My name is Nelson Amin Scott. Recently, I received an AFS Global Leader Scholarship that will assist me to be an exchange student in Japan for one year.
I have always wanted to go to Japan. I have read a lot about the Japanese culture; and I admire their grace, gentleness, and their strong belief in honor. I would also like to learn their language and way of life. I would be pleased to share my culture with them.
I have never been out of the country but I have always felt I was unique because my parents are from two different cultures. Many of my friends I interact with are from a variety of different cultures and ethnic groups. Some of my friends don’t know much English or have a pronounced accent but usually it makes me more eager to learn their culture.
I have also had the bounty of growing up in a spiritual community where everyone sees each other as family. This I enjoy. I think that our differences help us become who we are supposed to be, and this makes the world more interesting.
My personality and yearning to understand, and experience ,diverse cultures--especially the Japanese culture--will help me to face challenges; and develop lifelong relationships and experiences. I am excited about the opportunity to learn more global skills as an AFS exchange student in Japan.
To fulfill this opportunity, I must raise funds for the balance of my tuition abroad, not included in my scholarship. I need to raise $5,500.00--by December 15, 2009. I am asking for donations towards my tuition from our friends and family.
During my stay in Japan, I plan to post a weekly blog about my experiences. Upon my return(February of 2011), I will give a presentation to all of my sponsors, friends, and family.
Thank you kindly for your assistance!
Sincerely,
Nelson Amin Scott
